PETALING JAYA, Aug 13 (Bernama) --  Halal Development Corporation (HDC), an agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs Malaysia (MEA) today announced the appointment of Dato’ Mahmud Abbas as its Chairman effective 30 July 2019. The key focus of HDC is to drive revenue growth and sustainability of Malaysia’s halal industry in the global market.
 
As the Chairman of HDC, Dato’ Mahmud will play a significant role in advancing Malaysia’s halal agenda to greater heights, focusing on a stronger international presence.  This includes raising the nation’s profile as a top producer of halal products and services in the world as well as a preferred destination for halal businesses.
 
With over 30 years of experience in the corporate sector, Dato’ Mahmud possesses a strong record in leadership roles. His portfolio includes serving as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Central Spectrum (M) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd, a Selangor State GLC, for seven years, Project Director at UEM Land Bhd, Managing/Project Director at Alliance Sdn Bhd, and General Manager of ENSTEK.
 
Most recently he served as the Chief Executive Officer of Knowledge Economic City (KEC) in Madinah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a public listed company. His major career achievements include overseeing the turnaround of Central Spectrum by developing the State’s Halal arm .
 
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science - Building from Brighton University, United Kingdom, in 1982, and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Building, United Kingdom. In 1991 Dato’ Mahmud was selected to attend the Sloan Fellowship Programme at the London Business School and is a Sloan Fellow of the London Business School.
 
Dato’ Mahmud has been honored with the Jewels of Muslim World Award in 2015, and was accorded CEO of the Year by the Selangor Excellence Business Awards in 2017 for his vision, dedication and commitment to serving the best long-term interests of the organisation.  In 2017 he was Conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Dato`- Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah (D.S.I.S.) by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor, which carries the title Dato’.
