KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise”), one of Malaysia’s leading property developers, in collaboration with the National Archives of Malaysia, is hosting a special two-week exhibition from 2 to 16 September to celebrate Malaysia Day 2019 as well as showcase the history of and challenges faced during the formation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963.

Several other historical artefacts and photographs related to Merdeka will be featured, including the original Federation of Malaya hand-stitched flag and a table setting replicating the Proclamation of Malaysia. A Nash Rambler Custom Convertible 1951 car that accompanied the journey by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman in February 1956 when he rode to Malacca to announce the country’s independence will also be on display.

The “Father of Independence” had made a trip to London in 1956 to negotiate Malaya’s independence and upon returning home, the parade rode to Padang Banda Hilir (now known as Dataran Pahlawan) in Malacca where he announced the good news to the crowd of some 100,000 people.

Additionally, a mobile phone photography contest was held to demonstrate the participation of “The People of Malaysia” - citizens and non-citizens alike - who have contributed, in their own way, towards nation-building. Cash prizes worth up to RM13,500 were up for grabs for the Top 10 finalists, with the winning entry titled “Bersama-Sama Penang” earning Lim Kien Hock RM5,000.

“While randomly passing by this area, I saw these elderly road sweepers sharing a newspaper together. They were chatting and laughing with each other, so harmonious that it extols the meaning of Muhibbah,” said Lim Kien Hock who used an Oppo F11 mobile phone.

According to the judges comprising Fergana Art’s Jaafar Ismail, advertising filmmaker and artist Kamal Mustafa and Malaysian Insight CEO and editor Jahabar Sadiq, the winning shot is a refreshing take on the daily Malaysian life that seems perfectly composed with birds to add a touch of nature and randomness.

“While we admire those in the centre-stage of national development such as politicians and corporate figures, there are others who are on the fringes, but their contributions are no less important,” the judges added.

To celebrate the country’s 56th year as Malaysia, a visual arts exhibition comprising the galleries at Publika including Fergana Art, Segaris Art Center and Artemis Art will be held at the White Box, MAP@Publika. This exhibition involving 40 artists is uniquely positioned as a chronicler of cultural movements including mass and individual histories, both officially recognised as well as competing national narratives.

Meanwhile, there will also be a Piknik-Piknik Malaysia Bazaar to embrace the uniqueness and variety of our multiple cultures from 14 to 16 September at The Square, Publika. Come and discover various Malaysian cuisines and diverse cultural performances by artists from Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA) with the support of Jabatan Kesenian & Kebudayaan Negara (JKKN).

Additionally, 12 British-made classic and iconic vintage cars manufactured between 1951 to 1974 will be proudly displayed by car enthusiasts from the Malaysia and Singapore Vintage Car Register. The cars are culturally and historically significant as they were among the first few vehicles that traversed Malaysian roads before and after Merdeka.

The Hari Malaysia & Publika Art Show was officiated by YBhg. Datuk Isham Ishak, Secretary General of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) on 4 September 2019 at The Boulevard, Publika.
