KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- The National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA), Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) would like to urge the public to avoid buying and using this traditional product which has been detected to contain glibenclamide, a scheduled poison:
Following this, registration of this product has been cancelled by the Drug Control Authority (DCA) at its 338
th meeting on 5 September 2019. Any scheduled poison is not allowed to be formulated in a product which is classified as a traditional product.
ABOUT SCHEDULED POISON Glibenclamide is a scheduled poison and the supply of medicines with scheduled poisons is subjected to the Poisons Act 1952, whereby it can only be supplied by a registered medical practitioner or a licensed pharmacist. The use of glibenclamide without healthcare professional supervision can cause excessively low blood glucose which may eventually lead to seizure or loss of consciousness.
WARNING All sellers and distributors are warned to stop the sales and distribution of this product. Possession for sale and distribution of this product violates the Sale of Drugs Act 1952 and Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
An individual found convicted under these laws will face penalty not exceeding RM25,000 and or imprisonment for a period not exceeding three (3) years for the first offence and penalty not exceeding RM50,000 and or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five (5) years for a subsequent offence. A company found guilty can be fined up to RM50,000 for the first offence and a fine of up to RM100,000 for a subsequent offence.
Members of the public who experience discomfort or adverse effects after taking these products are advised to immediately stop using it and seek further advice from healthcare professionals.
