  HALAL INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (HDC) SIGNED MOU WITH FOOD INDUSTRY RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE TAIWAN (FIRDI) TO DEVELOP HALAL INDUSTRY IN TAIWAN THROUGH CREATION OF HALAL TALENT AND INDUSTRY COOPERATION OF BOTH COUNTRIES

TAIPEI,  Oct 7 (Bernama) --  Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC), an agency under Ministry of Economic Affair (MEA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Food Industry Research & Development Institute Taiwan (FIRDI) with  the strategic aim of to develop Halal Industry in Taiwan through creation of Halal Talent and industry cooperation  between both countries.
 
FIRDI is a non-profit legal entity in Taiwan to conduct research and development and to provide services with aim to promote the food and biotech industries in Taiwan.
 
FIRDI’s roles are to facilitate Taiwan's research and development in food technology and to develop new products and to improve sanitation and quality of processed food. The centre is also tasked to accelerate the transformation and upgrading of Taiwan’s food industry.
 
The MoU was signed by Hairol Ariffein Sahari, Acting Chief Executive Officer of HDC and Mr. Chii-Cherng Liao, Director-General of FIRDI. The exchange ceremony was held in conjunction with the Malaysia-Taiwan Industry Collaboration Summit 2019 in Taipei, Taiwan on 3 October 2019. The ceremony was witnessed by Eizaz Azhar, General Manager of Commercial Division and Dr. Tony Fang, Deputy Director General of FIRDI.
 
Both parties agree to shoulder responsibilities in coordinating the implementation of collaboration activities in the MoU and to coordinate the needs and output towards achieving common goal for comprehensive ecosystem in the Halal industry development agenda, which includes standards, innovation and technology transfer.
 
“Malaysia’s Halal export to Taiwan in 2018 was MYR750.9 million, an increase of 4.9% compared to MYR715.7 million in 2017. The export performance of the Halal sector to Taiwan has increased in tandem with the growing demand for Halal products particularly in food & beverages and Halal ingredients sectors, coupled with the increase in Halal awareness. The market is huge and this is a good opportunity for Malaysian players to expand market beyond Malaysian borders,” said Hairol Ariffein, acting CEO of HDC.
 
The collaboration with FIRDI will enable Malaysia’s companies to tap into the technical know-how of Taiwan’s food and biotech industries.
