SOCSO CEO'S COMMENT ON 2020 BUDGET

Monday 14/10/2019

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- SOCSO welcomes the 2020 Budget and would like to thank the Government for focusing on the social security for the rakyat in the Budget. These include the Social Security Scheme for Housewives and the expansion of the Self-Employed Employment Injury Scheme. The Government’s decision will enable SOCSO to expand social security coverage to those who are yet to be covered and ensure that they receive the minimum standards of social security protection.

Housewives, who are the backbone of the family, are also exposed to various risks such as accidents, illnesses and disabilities, who will need financial, care and welfare assistance during mishaps. Social protection for housewives through the new Scheme does not only contribute to family harmony but also social stability.

The 2020 Budget supports SOCSO's efforts to extend social protection to the self-employed. SOCSO is now preparing for the 4th Industrial Revolution by providing social protection to self-employed persons such as those who work on gig-economy platforms. These include food delivery services such as Food Panda and GrabFood, and possibly Gojek, if the service is available in the country.

Therefore, SOCSO will take the necessary steps in realising the Government's vision to extend the social safety net to the rakyat.
