PETRONAS CONTINUES TO SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF OIL & GAS TALENT VIA APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME

Tuesday 12/11/2019

PETRONAS continues to shape the industry through capability building initiatives by collaborating with CIDB and participating Oil & Gas Services & Equipment (OGSE) contractors for a new apprenticeship programme.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS continues its commitment towards building a sustainable pipeline of local semi-skilled Oil and Gas workers through a new apprenticeship programme with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and participating Oil & Gas Services & Equipment (OGSE) contractors.

In the collaboration, the participants would first attend CIDB’s training institution -- Akademi Binaan Malaysia (ABM), before undergoing apprenticeship programme at sixteen PETRONAS contractors’ facilities in Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchange ceremony was held recently to mark the first phase of the apprenticeship programme.

At the event, PETRONAS Senior Vice President, Project Delivery & Technology Samsudin Miskon said, “This collaboration serves as a platform for the training and certification of youths to have the required skills for the Oil and Gas industry, funnelling them into employment to ensure sustainable pipeline of skilled talents for the sustenance and continuity of operations.

“PETRONAS is providing a great opportunity for youths in Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu to be employed in the Oil and Gas industry at their respective states, in the spirit of giving back to the community.”

He added the programme is part of PETRONAS’ continuous effort to shape the industry through capability building initiatives and collaborations with various enablers to improve the ecosystem in which local OGSE players can increase their resilience and competitiveness.

Human capital development is one of the initiatives under PETRONAS’ Lestari programme - a solution and collaborative platform to strengthen the OGSE ecosystem.

Ministry of Works Secretary-General Dato’ Dr Syed Omar Sharifuddin Syed Ikhsan, who represented Minister of Works YB Baru Bian, witnessed the MoU exchange.

"The Ministry through CIDB supports programmes that help young skilled workers from ABM to be readily absorbed into the industry. Through these collaborations between PETRONAS, CIDB and other Oil & Gas players, industry players not only have the opportunity to acquire trained and accredited local workers, they also play a crucial role in the continued development of their industry competencies, which benefits the organisation’s growth as well as meets the workforce needs for projects and the industry in general,” he said.

CIDB Chief Executive Datuk Ir Ahmad Asri Abdul Hamid said that PETRONAS’ efforts to find solutions for the talent gap in the OGSE sector have also helped to create a channel for students in the construction line to gain employment in the Oil and Gas industry.

"I applaud PETRONAS for providing the exposure and opportunity for local talents trained in ABM to be apprentices in the Oil and Gas sector. This complements CIDB efforts in providing skills training in high impact trades in the construction industry such as welding, scaffolding and gas pipefitter, among others," he added.

The 16 participating contractors are Amalgamated Plant Engineering Sdn Bhd,  BWS Engineering Sdn Bhd Dayang Enterprise Sdn Bhd, Deleum Primera Sdn Bhd, EPIC OG Sdn Bhd, Evolusi Bersatu Sdn Bhd, Haluan Cekap Sdn Bhd, Hyperwave Systems Engineering Sdn Bhd, Maysville Sdn Bhd, Petra Resources Sdn Bhd, Rahabco Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd, Sapura Fabrication Sdn Bhd, Steel Hawk Engineering Sdn Bhd, Transfame Sdn Bhd, Turcomp Engineering Services Sdn Bhd and UBF Maintenance Sdn Bhd. These contractors serve both Upstream and Downstream Oil & Gas clients who were also present at the ceremony.

The event was an initiative arising from an earlier MoU, signed by PETRONAS and CIDB on December 14, 2018, in Kuala Lumpur, for both organisations to collaborate in the development and enhancement of capability for the Oil & Gas industry.
