MEDIA STATEMENT CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL (CSPO) FORUM: MSPO READY 2020 18 NOVEMBER 2019

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Palm Oil Certification Council (MPOCC) organised its annual event, “Certified Sustainable Palm Oil Forum (CSPO): MSPO Ready 2020”, is being held in conjunction with the International Palm Oil Congress and Exhibition 2019 (PIPOC 2019) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The half-day event is expected to be attended by about 500 international and local participants. The Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) Trace, a continuous Certification IT monitoring platform which will deliver accountability and traceability throughout the oil palm value chain from grower to customer will be launched at the event by YB Teresa Kok, Minister of Primary Industries. The Forum is being held for the fourth time to discuss the recent developments in the implementation of mandatory MSPO sustainability certification scheme for the Malaysian palm oil sector. This forum also provides the platform to discuss measures in further strengthening MSPO supply chain traceability for the export market next year, in line with the theme of this forum, MSPO Ready 2020. Discussions focused on adopting the MSPO certification standards in the local and global context, addressing emerging challenges, and exploring opportunities to further strengthen the palm oil sector. Key opinion leaders were present to deliver updates on: i) How the industry is adopting MSPO standards and their market implications. ii) Opportunities for MSPO certified products in the international market. A total of 5 papers will be presented namely, · MSPO For Independent Smallholders: Behind The Scene by Mr Mohd Shahrin Rahami, Ketua Unit Pelestarian, Pemuliharaan dan Pensijilan (SCCU), Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB); · ‘Creating A New Sustainable Landscape For Organised Smallholders, by Mr Izham Mustaffa, Director Of Plantation Dept, FELDA; · ‘Key Factors For Fuelling The Region’s Rising Demand For Sustainable Palm Oil Through MSPO Certification, by Mr Peter Benjamin, Vice President of The Malaysian Estate Owners Association (MEOA); · ´The Marketing Of MSPO: The Mewah Oils Story’ by Mr Danny Chua, Sustainability Team Lead, Mewah Oils & Fats Pte. Ltd. · Shaping The Future Of MSPO, Delivering The National Promise by Mr Chew Jit Seng, Chief Executive Officer, MPOCC; A total of six panelists representing MPOB, Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), The Palm Oil Refiners Association of Malaysia (PORAM), WWF Malaysia, COFCO and The Oilseeds and Solvent Extractors Association (SEA) will be present during the Panel Discussion session. The panel moderator is Mr Chew Jit Seng from MPOCC. The panelists will deliberate on government, industry and NGO perspective on MSPO and other sustainability certification schemes besides the perspectives of major international markets of Malaysia palm oil from India and China. The CSPO Forum, an annual event for MPOCC is organised for various stakeholders of the palm oil industry to share knowledge and experiences in implementing sustainability certification and market implications. MPOCC hopes that this event will further enhance the image of the Malaysian palm oil industry, improve competitiveness and form the basis for the branding of Malaysian palm oil. The forum will be officiated with an opening address by YB Teresa Kok, Minister of Primary Industries Malaysia.
