Driving Education and Clean-Up Efforts towards New Plastics Economy
 

PAKA, Terengganu, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) in collaboration with Yayasan PETRONAS yesterday took on Pantai Paka in Dungun for a beach clean-up activity for the 2019 PCG Be Green programme finale.
 
The annual programme, which started in 2013, is an environmental conservation and plastics usage awareness programme conducted in partnership with the Malaysian Plastic Manufacturers Association (MPMA).
 
Elaborating about the programme, PCG Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sazali Hamzah said “PCG Be Green this year, which has been conducted at four locations nationwide was strengthened to drive PCG’s New Plastic Economy (NPE) agenda with the injection of river and beach clean-up as well as education initiatives. We also want to encourage Malaysians to embrace our #recycleforlifecycle awareness campaign that will run up to next year.”
 
He added, “PCG aspires to become a solution partner in addressing plastic pollution and supporting the government to achieve its Circular Economy Roadmap through the ‘Malaysia Plastics Pact’. Towards this end, we are also focusing on innovation and infrastructure which recently saw us collaborating with two industry players to evaluate the potential development of solid waste modular advanced recovery and treatment (SMART) system, waste-to-energy and plastic waste to crude naphtha plants. In addition, PCG is also looking at providing solutions to brand owners in fulfilling their pledge to use environmental friendly packaging.”
 
During the programme at Paka, about 500 volunteers comprising community members, students and PETRONAS employees participated in the clean-up of Paka Beach. The volunteers collected a total of more than 1,450 kg of waste of which more than 870 kg are recyclable materials along the 3.5 km of coastline. The waste was segregated and sent to local recycling centres.
 
Earlier, as part of its #recycleforlifecycle awareness campaign, PCG educated more than 110 students, teachers and members of the local community on waste management including 3R (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) and effective plastics usage. This campaign was conducted in collaboration with Recycle Community Malaysia Lestari, an environmental-based non-governmental organisation.
 
To date, PCG Be Green programme 2019 has successfully collected a total of more than 2,700 kg of waste of which 1,290 kg are recyclable waste. PCG also successfully reached out to almost 17,000 students and community on plastics education.
