EXXONMOBIL SUPPORTS PRODUCTION OF PPE FOR MEDICAL FRONTLINERS WITH RM150,000 CONTRIBUTION TO MODA

KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Official Designers’ Association (MODA) is receiving RM150,000 from ExxonMobil subsidiaries in Malaysia to support the production of personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical frontliners at government hospitals and clinics involved with the current COVID-19 response and relief efforts.

“ExxonMobil is committed to doing our part to support the community during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Sukiman Mohamad, general manager - public and government affairs, ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc. (EMEPMI). “As providers of essential services ourselves, we recognize the challenges and sacrifices made by medical workers who continue to work during this unprecedented time, saving lives and caring for the sick. We hope our contribution will help to increase much-needed supplies of PPE to keep our medical personnel safe.”

MODA has been raising funds to purchase materials for PPE which are then sewn by MODA’s team of designers and volunteers. Approximately four metres of non-woven material is required to sew a set of PPE comprising of a head cover, boot cover and isolation gown. Over 40 fashion designers and private companies are currently taking part in this effort, with more than 200 seamstresses and tailors involved on a voluntary basis.

“We very much appreciate ExxonMobil and all our other contributors for partnering with us in our cause for the medical frontliners. Our members are playing a crucial role in this effort as they have the skills to sew. We hope to be able to help protect more frontliners while they perform their duties in keeping us safe at home,” said Melinda Looi, MODA’s president.

MODA is also partnering with the Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia Response & Relief Team (IMARET), a medical NGO which is assisting with the distribution of the completed PPE items to designated Ministry of Health facilities nationwide.

In addition to the contribution to MODA for the production of medical PPEs, EMEPMI also provided 50 large outdoor umbrellas to the Terengganu police contingent for use by personnel enforcing the movement control order at roadblocks in the state.

Globally, ExxonMobil is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by maximizing production of products such as isopropyl alcohol, a key ingredient in hand sanitizer, and polypropylene, used to make protective equipment for health care workers and first responders.

ExxonMobil is also working with the Global Center for Medical Innovation to design and support the manufacturing of reusable shields and masks for health care workers.
