SHAHRIL SHAMSUDDIN REAPPOINTED AS MIMOS CHAIRMAN

Tuesday 09/06/2020

The returning leadership will further strengthen MIMOS’ role as national R&D centre

BUKIT JALIL, June 9 (Bernama) -- National applied research and development (R&D) centre MIMOS, an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and innovation (MOSTI), has announced the appointment of corporate figure Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin as chairman of its Board of Directors, effective from 18 May 2020.

He succeeded Datuk Wira Omar Kaseh, who completed his three-year tenure.

This is the second time in twelve years that Shahril, 58, holds this position. He had earlier served as MIMOS Chairman from 16 January 2005 to 4 July 2008.

During his previous term with MIMOS, the centre had shifted its focus from business development to R&D for commercialisation towards national competitiveness. MIMOS also became the first government agency to be fully committed towards embodying integrity and ethics as part of its corporate governance in transforming the national R&D culture.

The reappointment of the oil and gas magnate is attributed to his management expertise, corporate leadership and capabilities in technology-intensive fields.

An industry professional with decades of experience, Shahril is the President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Sapura Energy Berhad. Since 2003, he has spearheaded the Group’s transformation from a domestic-focused oil and gas contractor to a global integrated oil and gas services and solutions provider with operations across the entire upstream value chain.

Beyond the oil and gas industry, Shahril is also the President and Group CEO of Sapura Group, which manages a diversified portfolio of businesses that include secured communications technologies, aviation, automotive manufacturing and property development.

Shahril holds a Master of Science in Management of Technology from MIT Sloan School of Management, USA and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from California Polytechnic State University, USA. He was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Technology Management by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in May 2013.

He also received several awards including the Legion d’Honneur by the Republic of France in 2007; Malaysia’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award by Ernst & Young in 2009, Man of the Year award by the Oil & Gas Year Malaysia in 2014, and honoured with the Order of Rio Branco by the government of Brazil in 2019.

Shahril’s return to MIMOS is expected to strengthen the centre’s roles in leading industry development which entails advanced R&D, technology ventures and incubation as well as capacity and capability building in the fields of ICT, semiconductor and microelectronics.

MIMOS Chief Executive Officer Emelia Matrahah said: "We are delighted to once again welcome Tan Sri Shahril. With his extensive experience and diversified portfolio, we are confident that he will lead MIMOS to even greater heights."
