KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- The project management fraternity from various industries have been urged to adopt an agile project management approach by enhancing digital capabilities and exploring new ways to create value beyond the delivery of projects, as the world embraces the new norm of project delivery.
These were among the messages highlighted by industry leaders at the two-day International Project Management Conference (IPMC) 2020 which ended yesterday, that saw the participation of 1497 total attendees, including 68 speakers, 25 sponsors and 33 exhibiting companies across 19 countries. Attendees at the virtual experiential project management event, hosted by PETRONAS, came from various industries, including oil and gas, new energy, building and infrastructure, maritime and shipping, and digital sectors.
Themed “Beyond Projects – Embracing the New Era”, the discussions centred on the necessary tools, capabilities and mindset needed in the new era of project management. The event was jointly officiated by the Senior Minister of Works, Malaysia Dato’ Sri Fadillah Haji Yusof, and PETRONAS President and Group Chief Executive Officer Tengku Muhammad Taufik.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony Dato’ Sri Fadillah said: “To survive and thrive, organisations will need to invest in building an agile delivery mindset tailored to their respective unique circumstances. The future project manager will need to become increasingly strategic and connected, developing new skills beyond traditional project management practices which will enable them to explore beyond the norm of delivering projects.”
Tengku Muhammad Taufik also echoed this sentiment in his Welcoming Address and stressed on the importance of digital skills in this era of technology. “By adopting an agile project management approach, the industry will be able to respond to new challenges with emerging technology and collaborative tools. Therefore, it is imperative for the industry to develop digital capabilities and nurture project delivery leadership skills that are defining the new way of working,” he said.
Placing emphasis on project management of the future, Chairman of the IPMC Organising Committee, Noor Ilias Mohd Idris, said in his closing address: “Project management challenges will continue to be prevalent. As businesses require more flexibility from their project managers, it will be up to the project managers to keep their skills sharp and their understanding of emerging trends and useful tools current in order to respond to their environment”.
Beyond the virtual conference halls, IPMC 2020 presented a lively virtual exhibition showcasing innovative solutions with interactive content. The International Project Management Association (IPMA) Malaysian Individual Award Ceremony also took place at the Closing of the event, where Mohd Amin Nor Rashyid Mahat, Zaharuddin Jaafar and Muhamad Wafi Muhamed emerged as winners of the Young Project Manager of the Year, Project Manager of the Year, and Agile Leader of the Year categories, respectively.
