• Imports of fresh produce from Peru by Asian countries continue to rise, closing the third quarter of 2020 with growth in excess of 3%.

• The Peruvian countries that attended the recent digital edition of ASIA FRUIT LOGISTICA ON reveal business deals of US $ 50 million in fruit and vegetables destined for Asia.

LIMA, Dec 23 (Bernama) -- Peru’s interest in Asia is very much reciprocated, further underlined by the figures at the close of the third quarter of 2020. According to SUNAT (Peru’s National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration), Peruvian agricultural exports to Asia amounted to US$ 507 million between January and October this year, representing an increase of 3.1% compared to the same period last year.

Exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to Asia reached US$ 320 million, accounting for 10% of Peru’s total fruit and vegetable exports worldwide. The main products exported to Asia were fresh grapes (US$ 109 million); fresh cranberries (US$ 90 million); avocados (US$ 69 million) and fresh mandarins (US$ 18 million). The South American country has become an international benchmark in the production of agri-food products in recent decades and is the world’s biggest exporter of cranberries, asparagus and quinoa; the second biggest exporter of mandarins; the third of avocados, and the fifth of table grapes.

Markets such as China, South Korea, India and Japan are already in the Top 10 of the main destination markets for Peruvian agri-food exports. However, the public and private sectors in Peru are continuing to work together to expand access to Asian markets for more Peruvian products.

“In the next few months, Peru will gain access to South Korea for produce such as cranberries, citrus fruits and pomegranates; and to the Japanese market for table grapes, cranberries and pomegranates,” explained Mario Ocharan, Export Director of the Peruvian Commission for the Promotion of Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ). For products with access to special-interest markets – such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand – Peru has rolled out powerful commercial promotion campaigns.

The most recent campaign by Peruvian companies in Asia was undertaken by five firms specializing in the fresh produce sector, who this year took part in the Asia Fruit Logistica ON digital meeting, coordinated by PROMPERÚ. All of them represent the high quality associated with Peru’s international export offering: fresh, top quality produce grown according to responsible and sustainable practices, thus warranting the certificates most frequently demanded by international buyers.

Agrícola Chapi, Agualima, Asglobalfresh, POMICA and Vison’s Peru held more than one hundred trade meetings which they expect to convert to US$ 50 million in closed export deals for fresh produce. “Asian consumers are among the world’s most discerning and well-informed when it comes to buying fruit and vegetables”, noted Augusto Baertl, the General Manager of Agrícola Chapi. Baertl also remarked on the opportunities for the further development of Peruvian products in China, thanks to the rapid growth and volume of sales; and singled out the Japanese and South Korean markets due to their insistence on quality and the prices they are willing to pay to get that quality.

Meanwhile, the Asglobalfresh representative noted that Asian markets are “essentially pro-Peru in the 2020-2021 season thanks to their high import growth and the fact that they are aligned with the differential advantage of breaking the seasonal nature of fruit production.”

With its sights already set on 2021, Peru is finalizing the promotional campaigns of the Superfoods Peru brand (https://peru.info/superfoods) which highlight its leading fruit and vegetables and the world-renowned Andean grains, among other products. These campaigns will be rolled out in various countries at points of sale, retail outlets and the HoReCa channel, thus continuing the strategy to position Peruvian products not only among trade professionals but also end consumers.
