UOB MALAYSIA APPOINTS NG WEI WEI TO DEPUTY CEO

Friday 02/07/2021

The promotion sees the Bank sharpening its focus on innovation and performance

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 (Bernama) -- UOB Malaysia has promoted its Head of Wholesale Banking, Ms Ng Wei Wei, to Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective 1 July 2021. In her new role, she will assist the CEO, Mr Wong Kim Choong, in driving the Bank’s strategic business priorities, including generating strong performance, developing more customer-centric solutions and progressing its innovation agenda as the Bank moves into the next phase of growth.

As Deputy CEO, Ms Ng retains her current role as Head of Wholesale Banking. Under her wholesale banking portfolio, she is also entrusted to manage and to provide oversight on the Bank’s Foreign Direct Investment Advisory, Islamic Banking and Labuan offshore businesses. In addition, she now oversees Retail Banking (comprising Personal Financial Services and Business Banking), Channels and Digitalisation, and the Risk Management functions. She will work closely with the respective function leads to achieve the Bank’s objectives and goals and to support the growth of UOB’s franchise across Asia.

On Ms Ng’s appointment, Mr Wong said, “Wei Wei’s promotion to Deputy CEO and her wider responsibilities will see her playing a stronger role in achieving our strategic priorities which include capitalising on regional growth drivers and harnessing technology to drive innovation and performance. Her appointment to this senior management role in UOB Malaysia not only reinforces the Bank’s leadership bench strength but also reflects our commitment to building a strong and diverse leadership team and to shaping a workforce that recognises gender equality.”

In her 25 years of banking experience, Ms Ng had spent six years at UOB Malaysia until 2006. Following various leadership roles at other global financial institutions in Malaysia and Hong Kong, she returned to UOB Malaysia in 2019 as Managing Director and Country Head of Wholesale Banking.

“Wei Wei is a home-grown talent, having honed her banking skills at UOB Malaysia in the earlier part of her career. Since returning to UOB, she has been instrumental in driving our Wholesale Banking business, most recently in steering the support for our customers to overcome the financial challenges caused by the pandemic. With her broadened mandate as Deputy CEO, I am confident her expertise and experience will contribute more widely to UOB Malaysia as we continue to build our capability and capacity in forging a sustainable future for our customers and stakeholders,” Mr Wong said.

Ms Ng graduated from the Monash University of Melbourne, Australia with a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, having double majored in Accounting and Management.
