Malaysians consume rice regularly, sometimes up to three times a day. The COVID-19 pandemic, with the rising concerns over non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes, serves as a reminder to Malaysians of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. An international study presented at the 2019 European Congress on Obesity however indicated that obesity was substantially lower in countries with high rice consumption. Professor Tomoko Imai of Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts, Kyoto, Japan, researched and stated that the fibre, nutrients and plant compounds found in whole grains enhanced the sensation of satiety, preventing overeating.
