Malaysia continues to supply the world with outstanding, innovative and healthy food items. KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysians’ love of food in every form and flavour has translated into an industry that is today recognised as one of the most unique and innovative globally, encompassing sectors such as processed seafood products and meats, dairy products, cocoa preparations and chocolates, tea, coffee and other beverages, cereals and flour preparations, processed fruits and vegetables, confectionery and sugar items, margarine and shortenings, herbs, spices, sauces and much more.
The industry has been able to take advantage of Malaysia’s tropical climate that allows for year-round commercial scale crop cultivation, complemented by its multi-cultural population and plethora of culinary offerings. As the country and global trends evolve, the industry has been similarly innovating in order to maintain its competitiveness and growth momentum.
There has, as such, been growing popularity amongst foreign buyers for Malaysia’s unique consumer packaged goods featuring pre-packed, ready-to-cook instant Malaysian meals including Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak, Rendang, fish curry and noodles among many others. While satisfying broader global consumer expectations, Malaysia has also been able to cater to those seeking organic and healthier food alternatives including functional foods containing bioactive components beneficial for health and with the potential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Malaysia is also acknowledged as a world leader in the area of halal food production and processing and is considered to have a leading advantage in the area with a comprehensive ecosystem covering broad aspects of halal food cultivation and manufacturing and a reputable and globally recognised certification system providing assurance of product safety and quality. Malaysia’s halal certification is currently among the most highly recognised globally.
The Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) will hold its 17
th Edition from 9 September to 31 December 2021, harnessing the power of virtual technology. The showcase will feature virtual exhibition, Artificial Intelligence (AI) assisted business matching sessions, virtual network lounge, industry specific sessions and live conferences to discuss export opportunities. Over the years, MIHAS has positioned itself as an excellent trading platform for halal manufacturers, suppliers and distributors from all over the world to gather, meet, network and conduct business. It is the largest halal trade event of its kind, with over 8,000 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and close to 400,000 visitors since its inception attesting to its effectiveness as a highly anticipated annual affair.
Malaysia’s exports of processed food in 2020 were valued at RM21.24 billion (USD5.06 billion) with major export destinations being Singapore, China, USA, Indonesia and Thailand. Processed food was among the main products sourced from Malaysia by some countries in ASEAN, West Asia and Africa.
The expansion and transformation of food production together with the growth in halal food and the overall food processing industry show the breadth of opportunities available in sourcing from Malaysian manufacturers. These are augmented with a variety of industry specific international standards such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and ISO 22000 Food Safety Management System (FSMS).
MATRADE has been providing assistance by ensuring that Malaysian companies continue to participate in global trade exhibitions such as Gulfood Dubai, Foodex Tokyo, SIAL Paris and ANUGA Cologne, while conducting extensive virtual meetings during this period of restricted movement via its eBizMatch programme between Malaysian suppliers and potential buyers.
