Ladies and gentlemen
Assalamualaikum, salam sejahtera, and a very good morning.
1. Firstly, I would like to thank the organizing committee for giving me the opportunity to speak at this event. On behalf of the Ministry of Health, let me welcome everyone to the 14th National Conference of Clinical Research, NCCR, 2021.
2. The NCCR has been annually organised since the year 2007, and it offers a platform where clinical researchers from diverse backgrounds can meet, display their work, and exchange ideas, thus assuring that researchers are up to date in their clinical research practice. Such a platform emphasizes that the Ministry of Health is committed to supporting clinical research in Malaysia, in keeping with the National Institutes of Health’s vision of being the leading health research organisation towards enhancing the health and well-being of the nation.
3. Each year, the NCCR centres on a different theme to highlight specific areas of clinical research. This year, the NCCR brings us the theme of Niche to Norm, featuring the fields of precision medicine, clinical trial, and digital health. The year of 2015 saw precision medicine coming into the picture of clinical practice. Precision medicine revolutionizes clinical practice by allowing for customisation of disease treatments based on the individual’s health profile, thus enhancing treatment success rates.
4. Within the healthcare fraternity, clinical trial can still be a foreign territory. However, this field has been growing in Malaysia for the past two decades, with cumulatively at least 1500 clinical trials performed. Our strength and experience in clinical trial has contributed to Malaysia being among the few countries in the Western Pacific region to be chosen for the COVID-19 vaccine trials
5. An up-and-coming field in healthcare globally is digital health. Further, with COVID-19, we are experiencing a digital world overcoming a pandemic. We are witnessing how healthcare delivery keeps apace with digital technology for example in promoting awareness and debunking myths of the COVID-19 vaccines through social media, and encouraging the public to get vaccinated through telemedicine.
6. Ladies and gentlemen, a conference such as the NCCR contributes to the growth in Malaysia’s research ecosystem by gathering research communities in knowledge exchanges and promoting robust collaborations. I would like to congratulate the Institute for Clinical Research and the Organizing Committee of NCCR for their amazing job in hosting the 14th NCCR despite the current circumstances. I also wish that the NCCR would continue to be an excellent platform to gather outstanding scientists throughout the nation in gaining insights from each other, as well as to galvanize the next generation of clinical researchers in Malaysia. With that, I wish you all an excellent time at NCCR 2021.
