KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- As the 64th Merdeka approaches, Dato' Seri Raymond Liew, Founder and President of McMillan Woods, together with Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia, two organizations represented by Malay, Chinese and Indians, embarked on the spirit of togetherness and gratitude for hard-pressed multi-racial (Malays, Chinese and Indians) communities, feeding over 2,000 hungry souls, while also supporting hawker stalls in the Klang Valley. As such, they invite Malaysia to come together this Merdeka to lend a helping hand to those that are in dire need of support during this pandemic.

Through the collaboration with Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia, 17 hawker stalls that were struggling to make ends meet were selected to prepare a total of 2,100 meals to be distributed to the underprivileged in - Shah Alam, Puchong, Petaling Jaya, Cheras, and Subang Jaya. Beginning 27th August, the two organizations embarked on a 3-day CSR Merdeka mission to feed hungry souls from multi-racial communities, such as old folks' homes, orphanages, E-hailing riders and drivers, single mothers, struggling families, taxi drivers, the B40 community, and even those from the tourism sector.

Through the MCM Cares Program driven by McMillan Woods, that has contributed over RM1.5 million since its inception on 1st January 2014 to various charities and causes, a donation of RM20,000 was allocated for this campaign themed - “Patronized as Malaysians, We Live to Eat” #MCMWeLiveToEat. The campaign conveys the message that every human being from any social economic status, race, or religion deserves to live and eat. Putting that in mind during this Merdeka, may we help one another and feed hungry souls that have suffered immensely during this pandemic.

The meals were distributed as follows:

Dato' Seri Raymond Liew enforced the idea of serving all the races in Malaysia through his CSR campaign. Equality was ensured in every step of the way, from the selection of hawker stalls to determining poor and struggling recipients, no one was turned away just because of their race. While Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia worked hard to organize the food distribution among the muslim communities, other passionate individual volunteers, such as Datin Flora Tan, John Teo, William Arul, Adam Ham, Kevin Chong, Dan Lo, Michelle Tan, Phei Ling, Ikazys, Jessica Lee, also came in to assist on distribution of non-halal hawker cuisines.

Dato' Seri Raymond Liew said, “We have set the focus of this CSR campaign on communities that might have been overlooked by government aid agencies. As we celebrate Malaysia's 64th National day, it is now more important than ever to put our differences aside and come together to show our support to those who are struggling amidst this pandemic. There are many who are starving each day, not even knowing when their next meal might be. This drives me to contribute to the best of my capabilities to provide relief to these hungry souls and hawker stalls. I implore the rakyat to do the same.”

It doesn’t feel quite right to celebrate Malaysia’s independence while many are starving and trying to survive. It has been two years now since everyone has been restricted from moving around and been confined to their homes. In these two years, many people have been retrenched and forced to adapt with no income. Those who were lucky got to eat another meal, some did not get that privilege. This matter was brought to light through this campaign, expressing the importance of feeding the poor, especially during this Merdeka.

Board of Trustee Member Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia, Dr Mohamad Salmi Mohd Sohod said, “We have carefully identified 20 hawker stalls that are not making sufficient sales to survive. Some of these hawkers have been retrenched from their companies and turned to selling food for a living and to put food on the table for their families. We are honored to be able to play my part in this mission to only support the hawkers but to feed the underprivileged at the same time.”

On a separate matter, McM Cares also raised an additional amount of RM137,370 together with a few generous donors with the help of Dato’ Sri Shamir Nandy to raise the funds needed to purchase a Bronchoscope, a specialized medical equipment from Germany, that will be of aid to Hospital Sungai Buloh. The life-saving equipment is used primarily to treat collapse consolidation and to acquire an accurate diagnosis of infection.

The Hospital Director of Hospital Sg Buloh, Dr Kuldip Kaur A/P Prem Singh, was present to receive the official donations and commented, “As Merdeka is approaching, and while the Covid-19 cases are still severely rising in the Klang Valley, the hospital requires more bronchoscopes in different ICUs so that multiple cases can be treated at the same time. We sincerely thank McM Cares for their generosity and with this additional equipment, additional lives will be saved as we transition through another independence day.”
