KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- The UMW Group concluded 2021 on a strong footing with automotive sales of 32,229 units in December 2021. Both UMW Toyota Motor (“UMWT”) and UMW’s associate company, Perodua, continue to register higher sales despite the challenges brought about by the flooding in December 2021.
UMWT registered sales of 9,289 units in December 2021, 9.4% higher compared with the 8,487 units sold in November 2021. For the full-year, UMWT surpassed its 2021 sales target of 62,000 units with a total delivery of 72,394 units, 22.0% more than the 59,320 units registered in 2020. As a result, UMWT had successfully regained the leadership of the non-National segment in the domestic automotive market. The solid performance was mainly contributed by the introduction of new models as well as the sales tax exemption. Toyota Vios continues to be the best-selling model with 31% of its total sales, followed by the Hilux and Yaris. Expanding its product offering into the electrified vehicle space, UMWT’s first locally assembled Toyota model with Hybrid Electric Technology, Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid will be launched today.
Perodua closed 2021 with sales of 22,940 units in December, 13.0% higher than the 20,299 units sold in November 2021, mainly due to the recovery in the supply chain. Perodua registered a total sales of 190,291 units in 2021, 13.6% lower than the 220,154 units sold in 2020. Sales was affected by the Full Movement Control Order (“FMCO”), the semiconductor chips shortage and the flooding in December, which disrupted the operations of a few of its vendors in the Klang Valley. Perodua’s best-selling models for the year were the Myvi, followed by the Axia and Bezza. Moving forward, the newly launched facelift version of the highly-popular Myvi is expected to contribute positively in 2022.
UMW Holdings Berhad’s President and Group CEO, Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali expressed, “Both UMWT and Perodua have shown resilience and performed well for the year considering the headwinds and challenges including the semiconductor chips shortage and disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and flooding. Going forward, the encouraging outstanding order book, introduction of new models as well as the extension of the sales tax exemption until 30 June 2022, are expected to sustain the automotive sales recovery in 2022. We wish to express our appreciation and thank you to our customers for their continuous support and we look forward to serving them better in 2022.”
