· Peruvian agrifood exports in Malaysia rose by 51.7% during the period of January to October 2021

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- Trade between Peru and Asia in the fruit and vegetable sector has made positive progress over the last year. Exports of Peruvian agrifood products to Malaysia were notably boosted between January and October 2021, displaying growth of 51.7% compared to the same period in 2020.

The main agrifood product exported is raw cocoa beans, whose consignments to Malaysia amounted to almost US$ 13 million; that is to say, 58.2% more than the export value recorded between January and October 2020.

Also, Peru has established itself as the leading exporter country for blueberries worldwide after exporting 162,459 tonnes in the last campaign. In that regard, exports of Peruvian blueberries to the Malaysian market increased by 409.9% last year compared to 2020. On the other hand, dates also displayed significant export growth by recording a rate of growth of 518% during that period. Also, fresh pomegranates, sweet potato flour, beans and fresh figs are also among the products that have led Peruvian exports to Malaysia.

In terms of the 32.4 million inhabitants of Malaysia, the consumption per capita of fruit is around 68.5kg, with 23.9% imported. Likewise, the import rate for vegetables is 77%.

This important data positions this market as a commercial partner with great potential for Peru. For that reason, despite the general perception of products that come from Peru in Malaysia and the fact that the Peru Brand is still small, over recent years this market has become a major priority for Peruvian exports.

PERU IN ASIAN MARKETS
The main destination markets for Peruvian agri-food products in Asia in 2020 were China (US$182 million), Hong Kong (US$158 million), South Korea (US$116 million) and Japan (US$89 million).

In South-East Asia, the main destinations are Indonesia (US$11.5 million), Malaysia (US$6.4 million), Thailand (US$8 million), Vietnam (US$4 million) and Singapore (US$1.4 million).
