KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 6 (Bernama) -- Joint Chairman of Triterra Group, Datuk Seri Dr. Michael Yam was recently announced as the 119th President of Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for 2022 and 2023, a 188-year-old establishment and the world’s most influential professional body for construction. Yam is the first Malaysian and the second Asian to be given this prestigious role. He has over 35 years of experience in the construction, real estate, and corporate sector, not only in his home country but also in the UK, Australia, and South Africa. He has been a CIOB member since 1983.

During his first speech as President at the CIOB’s annual Member’s Forum that took place virtually between 28 to 30 June 2022, Yam spoke of his ambition to promote and improve sustainability in the built environment sector and the “gradual reset” needed to reach Net Zero commitments along with his belief that sustainability will be a “catalyst for greater innovation and new skills.” He said: “I look forward to using my time as CIOB President as a platform to help bring about change to the sustainability agenda, along with our 47,000 global members who are well placed to be hugely influential on this important matter which will affect all our futures.”

With more than four decades of construction and real estate experience, Yam has always been revered by his peers and with this milestone achievement, it also serves as an inspiration to young, aspiring builders. Yam not only serves as joint Chairman of Triterra Group, but he is a stellar mentor to the group’s CEO, Christopher Lim, who is spearheading, the anticipated opening of The MET, the first grade A stratified office in Mont Kiara.

• Michael Yam has served in top management positions at various award winning public listed property companies prior to his retirement, including Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, Paramount Corporation Berhad and a global bank in Malaysia with headquarters in London and Hong Kong
• He is currently Chairman of InvestKL Corporation – a Malaysian Government investment agency and several investment holding companies
• Until retirement in 2008 Michael was MD of a public listed property company developing and investing in real estate in Malaysia, the UK, South Africa and Australia
• He has also served on the advisory board of the City of Kuala Lumpur, was an independent director of the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and for Malaysia’s Construction Industry Development Board
• For his services to the property and construction industry he was conferred the Seri Mahkota Wilayah in 2011 by the King giving him the title of Datuk Seri (equivalent to a knighthood)
• Michael was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University by Herriot Watt University in 2021 and is currently the Chancellor of the University of Wollongong in Malaysia.
