PETRONAS CONTRIBUTES RM2.5 MILLION TO MERCY MALAYSIA'S PAKISTAN MONSOON FLOOD RESPONSE

Thursday 15/09/2022

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS has contributed RM2.5 million to MERCY Malaysia as aid for the victims of the monsoon floods that recently hit the South and Northwest parts of Pakistan.

The funds will be utilised for the mobilisation of MERCY Malaysia’s Rapid Assessment Team and provision of health-related emergency support via its Pakistan Monsoon Flood Response. The contribution will also aid Pakistan in a phased implementation of its Flood Recovery as well as Preparedness and Community Resilience Programmes.  These initiatives are expected to be rolled out over the next 25 months.

PETRONAS’ Senior General Manager of Group Strategic Communications, Datin Anita Azrina Abdul Aziz said: “We are deeply saddened by the calamity that has resulted in loss of lives, livelihood and damage to properties with millions being left homeless. Together with MERCY Malaysia, we have drawn up a detailed two-year plan in addressing the current needs of Pakistan and post-flood essentials. It is our hope that the contribution will help ease the burden of the victims as well as the local authorities in managing the aftermath.”

The floods have affected 33 million people with 560 thousand homes destroyed and 1.74 million homes damaged. Thousands of lives have also been lost.

MERCY Malaysia President, Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said: “PETRONAS’s contribution for the Pakistan Monsoon Flood Response demonstrates the value of private-civil society solidarity towards humanitarian crises. The floods have brought to the fore critical global concerns, intensified climate-related devastations, which result in protracted health issues and socio-economic instabilities. This two-year partnership supports MERCY Malaysia’s commitment in providing solutions that needs to coherently address the community’s vulnerability before, during and after crises, which will be implemented through three key pillars – emergency health, humanitarian health and developmental health.”

PETRONAS and MERCY Malaysia have a long-standing partnership, which started in 2004 following the Indian Ocean Tsunami and have to date extended humanitarian assistance and reliefs to seven countries including Malaysia.
