  • Other PCG community-driven initiatives include SHOC4School programme and community relief programme

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG) recently wrapped up its annual Be Green programme in the Klang Valley region, as part of its sustainability initiative to drive the nation towards a circular economy.

Partnering with the Ministry of Education’s National STEM Centre, Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association and Cenviro Sdn. Bhd., the programme welcomed a total of 200 volunteers from 27 selected schools in Kajang, Hulu Langat and Bangi as well as the locals from Pangsapuri Prima Cempaka, Kajang, together with PCG employees and collaborative partners.

The sustainability campaign featured an educational talk on the impact of responsible waste management followed by a communal clean-up of the area surrounding Taman Tasik Cempaka, Bangi.

“We hope to instil the culture of recycling and spread awareness on waste management among Malaysians, particularly the youth,” said PCG Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer Ir. Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof.

“By nurturing our children at a budding age, we can create a responsible generation with greener habits for a sustainable future,” he added.

In line with its aspiration to become a solution partner in addressing plastic pollution, PCG introduced the Be Green programme in 2013, an environmental conservation and waste management programme, with the aim to accelerate its New Plastics Economy (NPE) initiative promoting plastics circularity.

Backed by the four core pillars of Innovation, Infrastructure, Education and Clean-up, the purpose of the programme is to educate the community on proper waste collection and segregation and keeping the environment clean through 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) practice.

PCG Be Green was also incepted in selected schools throughout Malaysia, particularly Gurun, Sipitang and selected areas in Selangor where they organise recycling campaigns for a 2-month period. The initiative has successfully collected a total close to 45,000kg of recyclable waste as of December 2022.

To complement this initiative, PCG also published and circulated the Plastic, Sustainability & You Education (PSYE) supplementary module to schools across the nation in 2019, teaching proper ways to manage end-of-life plastics and the importance of plastic circularity. This year, The PSYE module has successfully reached over 200,000 students as well as the community.

“It’s important for us teach the young generation on proper plastic management, to ensure the we leave behind a greener world for them. This is where PCG’s Plastic, Sustainability & You plays an integral part in environmental conservation and we laud PCG for introducing this initiative,” said Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Abdul Jalil’s teacher Nor Aida.

Aside from the Be Green initiative, PCG also collaborated with National STEM Centre to introduce the Safe Handling of Chemicals for Schools (SHOC4School) programme, aimed at educating students, teachers and lab assistants on lab safety and proper chemical management, as part of our duty as a responsible corporation in the industry.

To top it all off, PCG engaged in community relief programme focusing on aiding the B40 group as well as victims of climated-related disasters. Through this initiative, PCG provided food relief and basic necessary essentials to approximately 1,500 families across selected regions in Malaysia.
