The collaboration is expected to bring the total number of trees to be planted to 30,000, with a total investment amount of RM750,000, in support of the state of Johor’s effort to develop Sg. Johor estuary in the island as an eco-tourism attraction and community-based mangrove conservation activities.
“With 15,500 mangrove trees to be planted for the rest of 2023, we expect to make positive impacts on efforts towards reforestation, shoreline protection and expansion of mangrove eco-system in Pulau Tanjung Surat.
“We also see this initiative as a way to create long-term value for our stakeholders including the communities we serve by improving their livelihood through the creation of economic opportunities especially for the villagers of Pulau Tanjung Surat, namely Kampung Linting, Kampung Nyior and Kampung Tanjung Surat,” said PRPC Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, Kamal Bahrin Ahmad.
The expanded mangrove conservation programme was attended by PCG’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Ir. Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof.
“First established in 2005 in Kerteh as ecoCare, the mangrove conservation and rehabilitation programme is a collaborative effort initiated by PCG and the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS). We are delighted that other companies within the PETRONAS Group are seeing the benefits of this programme and taking the initiative to replicate it within their areas of operations. By coming together, we are all playing our part in realising PETRONAS’ net zero aspirations,” said Ir. Mohd Yusri.
The programme is a continuous effort which started between PRPC and PT2SB in December 2021. As of 31 December 2022, 14,500 mangrove trees have been planted within the 5.5 acres for reforestation of mangrove degraded area.
In this collaboration, PCG has committed to plant 9,000 mangrove trees, while both PRPC and PT2SB are progressively meeting their targets of planting 10,500 mangrove trees respectively.
Among the positive impacts from the mangrove conservation programme include, creating job opportunities to 26 local villagers, comprising single mothers and those from the B40 groups with average monthly additional income of RM500 per person.
Additionally, this is also in line with PETRONAS’ Sustainability Agenda namely on the commitment to conduct and grow business in ways that contribute positively to society (Positive Social Impact) and the environment (Safeguard the Environment) which are aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
Also in attendance for the mangrove conservation programme were 134 volunteers from PRPC, PCG, PT2SB and local villagers.
