KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) welcomesthe launch of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) by the Minister of Economy, YB Rafizi Ramli, on 27 July 2023.

“We are excited by the release of NETR that will set Malaysia on a coordinated path towards achieving Net Zero as early as 2050. Natural gas is set to remain important to the nation’s energy transition journey in ensuring energy security and driving socio-economic growth. YAB Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’s Seri Anwar Ibrahim, last month stated that Malaysia will continue to see natural gas playing an important role in the energy mix to transition towards a lower carbon economy for decades to come,” Abdul Aziz Othman, President of Malaysian Gas Association (MGA), commented.

“The path towards energy transition must be pragmatic and equitable with natural gas playing an instrumental role. As the cleanest burning fuel that is reliable and flexible, natural gas makes the best partner for renewable energy in a sustainable energy transition towards a low-carbon future. The gas industry is not a climate denier and is committed to consciously reducing our GHG emission footprint in the shorter term and decarbonising the industry in the longer term. The Kasawari and Lang Lebah Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) project in East Malaysia, which has been included in Phase 1 of NETR, is an example of the industry’s commitment to providing clean, secure and reliable energy with mitigated impact to climate change,” added Abdul Aziz.

“We welcome the announcement to introduce a regulatory framework for Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS). With the right framework and incentives, CCS will play a major part in decarbonising the value chain of the gas industry; both in upstream production and in downstream combustion. In addition to CCS, other decarbonisation initiatives in the industry includes exploring opportunities in low carbon and renewable gases such as Hydrogen and Biogas.” said Abdul Aziz.
