SEDA MALAYSIA GROWING ALONGSIDE NATION'S SUSTAINABLE ENERGY INDUSTRY
Tuesday 28/11/2023
PUTRAJAYA, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia is committed to developing the nation’s sustainable energy (SE) industry, in line with the function and mandate given by the Government since its establishment in 2011. In an interview with Selamat Pagi Malaysia on 27 November 2023, Chairman of SEDA Malaysia YBrs. Tuan Ahmad Zairin Ismail said that The Authority has been carrying out various SE programmes introduced by the Government for the past 12 years and will continue to do so. This includes clean energy generation from renewable energy (RE) resources programmes as well as energy usage and management programmes such as energy efficiency in buildings for industrial and commercial sectors. The programmes will ensure that the SE industry continues to progress further while meeting the country’s target to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. “The impact from the programmes run by SEDA Malaysia, such as the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mechanism and Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme can be seen not only from the aspect of reduction of carbon emissions; these programmes also brought investment to the country. For example, in 2023 alone, the NEM programme has successfully attracted local investment in RE projects worth around RM3 billion.” As the Chairman who was newly appointed last May, Tuan Zairin is determined to continue strengthening The Authority’s role as a think-tank in advising the Government on topics such as SE development and how SE plays a part in the climate change mitigation component, which aligned with Sustainable Energy Development Authority Act 2011 (Act 726). This is because implementing the ‘Energy Transition’ agenda through RE directly relates to reducing carbon emissions globally. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration from various stakeholders, industry players, and the public to ensure the target of net zero carbon emission and 70 per cent RE installed capacity by 2050 will be achieved. This is so that a decoupling effect can be observed between economic development and energy demand, resulting in low carbon emissions.
“Climate change issue does not only involve the energy sector, but it also involves other sectors such as biodiversity and forestry, which also plays an important role. As one of the agencies under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), SEDA Malaysia, alongside the Ministry and other agencies, has a big responsibility in leading the energy transition agenda, thus reducing carbon emission.” “I am confident, with strong collaboration with all stakeholders, Malaysia can meet the goal of zero carbon emission by 2050 and putting the country’s status as a developed nation.”
