SEDA Malaysia’s Chief Executive Officer, YBhg. Dato’ Hamzah spoke during the “Malaysia’s National ET Roadmap and next steps” session on COP28 2023 in Dubai, UAE, on December 4, 2023. His discourse highlighted SEDA Malaysia’s pivotal role in propelling the ET agenda and tapping into the growing demand for renewable energy sources, mainly in the emerging bioenergy industry.

The session also featured distinguished panel speakers such as Azreen Idayu Zainal from the Securities Commission Malaysia, YBhg. Dato’ Idzham Mohd Hashim from Iskandar Investment Berhad, Michele Azalbert from Gentari, and Robert Hardin from SEDC Energy and moderated by YBrs. Tuan Mohammed Rashdan Mohd Yusof from the Energy Commission.

DUBAI, Monday, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- The Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia aims to lead the charge towards a more sustainable energy future by spearheading initiatives to promote bioenergy clustering. The Authority stands poised to forge partnerships with its key stakeholders to accelerate a responsible energy transition (ET) for Malaysia, aligning with global sustainability goals.

In a recent panel discussion at the 28th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), SEDA Malaysia’s  Chief  Executive  Officer,  YBhg. Dato’ Hamzah Hussin shed light on the Authority’s upcoming National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) plans on harnessing new technology and encouraging collaboration between different sectors with strong bioenergy potentials.

Spearheading Bioenergy Clustering Project
Under the National Energy Transition Policy (NETR), SEDA Malaysia has been entrusted to spearhead a Bioenergy clustering initiative to foster a more significant demand for biomass, and the Authority aims to bolster demand for biomass, specifically within the palm oil industry.

During the session, YBhg. Dato’ Hamzah also shared about the commitment of the Authority to bridge the gap between the untapped potential outlined in the Malaysian Renewable Energy Roadmap (MyRER), published by SEDA Malaysia. The roadmap indicates the presence of 3.6 GW of renewable energy resources within the bioenergy sector with 16 identified clusters, and the Authority aims to facilitate the realisation of this potential into actual capacity. Coupled with ongoing incentives such as the FiT mechanism, this strategic move is poised to catalyse investments in bioenergy, profoundly impacting the nation's energy generation capacity mix.

Considering Malaysia's prominent status as a leading global palm oil producer, the initiative aims to expand its capacity by supporting projects focused on biomass, biogas, and waste-to- energy (WTE).

“SEDA Malaysia has proposed several strategies for boosting the bioenergy industry, such as promoting technology exchange between Malaysia and developed countries, partnering with private sector entities and renewable energy companies. Thus, it will create spin-off economic opportunities and invest in innovative technologies to convert various types of biomass waste into electricity or other forms of energy. The initiatives are geared towards creating environment-friendly solutions while providing job opportunities within the industry,” added YBhg. Dato’ Hamzah.

Innovative Approach: Vital for a Successful ET
Innovation plays a dual role in achieving net-zero GHG aspirations as early as 2050. It facilitates our progress and ensures the continuation of remarkable advancements in energy transition.

The Authority is looking to the future, aiming to establish an innovative infrastructure that fosters the advancement of renewable energy within the country. To achieve this objective, SEDA Malaysia intends to enhance the FiT mechanism, enabling the inclusion of new energy sources, such as geothermal and wind energy.

Accordingly, SEDA Malaysia is keen on exploring various potential funding sources, namely carbon taxes, per cent contributions from renewable energy sales to neighbouring countries, and reallocating funds from fossil fuel subsidies to renewable energy funds. By leveraging these resources, SEDA Malaysia can develop infrastructure that will support acceleration in the share of RE in the grids.

Accelerating Energy Transition Through Innovation
SEDA Malaysia in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC) has successfully soft-launched the 6th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2024. The event was part of the Energy Transition Day at Malaysia’s Pavilion at COP28, officiated by YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of NRECC and will be held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on 20th and 21st August 2024.

Themed “Accelerating Energy Transition Through Innovation”, the summit aims to catalyse transformative dialogue on sustainable energy solutions. This reflects Malaysia's unwavering commitment to driving the global energy transition through innovative strategies.

ABOUT SEDA MALAYSIA
Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia is a statutory body reporting to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC). SEDA Malaysia was established in September 2011 under the SEDA Act 2011 [Act 726] with the key purpose of driving the renewable energy and energy efficiency agenda in the country.
