KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- The Green Building Index (GBI), Malaysia's premier and international green building benchmark, proudly marks a momentous achievement with the certification of 300 million square feet of green buildings across Malaysia. This remarkable milestone encompasses 671 GBI-certified projects out of 1,176 registered projects, achieved through GBI's 18 rating tools tailored to Malaysia's tropical climate.

This announcement was made at the “Celebration of 300 Million Square Feet of GBI-Certified Green Buildings” at PAM Centre today, which was officiated by YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming, Minister of Local Government Development. Also present were Ar. Abu Zarim Abu Bakar, GBI Board Chairman, Ar. Dr. Serina Hijjas, GBI Accreditation Panel (GBIAP) Chair cum President of Malaysia Green Building Council (MGBC), other members of GBI Board and GBIAP, and industry practitioners.

Beyond the numbers, GBI's contribution to sustainability and environmental stewardship is profound. These projects have collectively led to a substantial reduction of carbon emissions, with an estimated annual decrease of 1,749,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2E).

This milestone signifies GBI's dedication to supporting Malaysia's ambitious sustainability policies and national goals, such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap. GBI's multifaceted approach to green building practices, tailored to Malaysia's tropical climate, underpins its effectiveness in contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions, an essential component of Malaysia's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

In congratulating GBI for this achievement, YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming said: “Greening the buildings in Malaysia with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2023 will need to move to a whole-of-nation approach to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 45% across the economy by 2030, and to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.”

The meticulous customisation of GBI rating tools tailored specifically for Malaysia, while adhering to global standards, marks a distinctive feature. GBI sets itself apart through the rigorous implementation of its certification process, distinguishing it from other rating systems. GBI, the only rating tool supported by MGBC has established a sustainability benchmark widely acknowledged within the construction industry.

Functioning as a non-profit organisation, GBI's structure has not only spurred growth in the construction sector but also continues to strive for a more expansive portfolio reflective of evolving standards. The attainment of 300 million square feet is a noteworthy accomplishment that both GBI and the entire construction industry can take pride in.

"Reaching the 300 million square feet milestone is a moment of immense pride and commitment for GBI. Our rating tools, specially designed for Malaysia's unique context, have empowered us to significantly reduce carbon emissions while creating healthier, more sustainable living and work spaces.

“This accomplishment is a nod to Malaysia's vision of a greener, more sustainable future," stated Ar. Abu Zarim, who is also President of Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM).
