MCMC STRENGTHENS CYBERCRIME FIGHT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UNODC

Thursday 30/05/2024

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in close collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), is taking the lead in the fight against cybercrime across Southeast Asia. This commitment was reiterated at the UNODC Joint Policy Dialogue on Industry Regulation and Enforcement in Managing Cybercrime, an event held from 28 to 29 May 2024, dedicated to tackling the dynamic and ever-evolving threats in the digital realm.

The Joint Policy Dialogue serves as a critical platform for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and industry leaders to discuss and formulate strategies for a safer digital world, including strengthening regulations for Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms to curb cybercrime and the spread of illegal content. MCMC is strongly advocating for technological solutions that prioritise user safety and mitigate the dissemination of illicit content across online platforms.

MCMC played a pivotal role in facilitating discussions to address the challenges of OTT platform regulation and the formulation of comprehensive cybercrime prevention policies, championing a collaborative approach to enhancing digital security and regulatory frameworks.

In addition, MCMC is taking a proactive stance in bolstering regional regulatory and policy frameworks through active information sharing and collaboration with government representatives from Malaysia, Thailand, Lao PDR, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. This effort aims to develop a robust regional strategy and action plan to effectively combat cybercrime, focusing on enhancing regional security, improving cross- border cooperation, and strengthening legal frameworks while balancing technological innovation with robust regulation.

Understanding key trends and navigating the evolving regulatory landscape will be critical to achieving success in regulatory oversight and ensuring resilient digital ecosystems. Such a balance is crucial to cultivating a secure digital environment that fosters economic growth while safeguarding fundamental human rights.

Through ongoing dialogue and concerted efforts, MCMC strives to pave the way for a safer and more resilient digital future for all.
