PETRONAS TO BOOST NORTHERN CCS HUB IN TERENGGANU WITH PRE-FEED STUDY ON ONSHORE SOLUTIONS

Monday 12/08/2024

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS, through its subsidiary PETRONAS CCS Solutions Sdn Bhd (“PCCSS”), will embark on a five-month study to assess the onshore terminal, jetty and pipeline for its Northern Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Hub in Terengganu, Malaysia. This study will be followed by the advancement into the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase.

As one of three CCS hubs planned by PETRONAS, the Northern CCS Hub will play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions from PETRONAS and hard-to-abate industries across the Asia Pacific region. The hub aims to achieve an initial capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and is expected to begin its first CO2 injection as early as 2029.

“Entering the pre-FEED phase marks a promising milestone towards establishing another groundbreaking CCS hub in Peninsular Malaysia. This study allows us to assess the suitability of existing infrastructure and develop optimal onshore solutions for future operations," said PCCSS Chief Executive Officer, Nora'in Md Salleh.

"The study will evaluate the Northern CCS Hub's capacity to accommodate liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers and ensure adequate storage prior to injection. The preFEED will focus on the onshore terminal, with Kertih Port Sdn Bhd's land identified as a potential site," she added.

This progress follows a positive development for the Southern CCS Hub, where PCCSS recently signed a land rental agreement with Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd.

As a progressive energy and solutions partner, this initiative demonstrates PETRONAS’ unwavering commitment to achieving its Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) target by 2050. It also reinforces the company’s support for the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) goals, contributing to Malaysia’s responsible transition to a low-carbon future.
