  HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY MALAYSIA MAKES SEVERAL NEW APPOINTMENTS AIMED AT ENHANCING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Heriot-Watt University Malaysia today announced the appointment of several distinguished leaders to pivotal positions within the institution.
 
These appointments align with the University’s Strategy 2035, which leverages its heritage, expertise, and global reach to advance academic excellence and innovation. They support the mission of delivering world-class education to both local and international students, essential for excelling in a globalised job market.
 
Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi, Provost and Chief Executive Officer said, “We are thrilled to welcome our new leadership team. Their extensive regional and global experience aligns with our mission to enhance purpose-driven education and exceptional learning experiences. Together, we will drive innovation in Malaysia and beyond, positively impacting the communities we serve.”
 
Professor Dr Lai Yin Ling Appointed Deputy Provost
Professor Dr Lai brings visionary leadership and extensive experience in business development, quality management, and curriculum design. Her career includes transformative contributions to top education groups in Malaysia and a not-for-profit institution in Singapore, facilitating the global accreditation of over 50 innovative academic programmes. As a Founding Member of The Asian Society for Engineering Education, she has advanced global engineering education.
 
Professor Dr Lai said, “I am honoured to join the University as Deputy Provost. I look forward to working with such a dynamic team to drive innovation and excellence in our academic programmes and partnerships. I look forward to leading the University’s globalisation strategy, developing transnational programmes, and establishing strategic partnerships to enhance the University’s international presence and enrich student experiences.”
 
Mr Alex Lim Appointed Regional Director, Marketing Recruitment, Admissions & Communications
With close to 30 years of experience across Southeast Asia, Mr Lim brings significant marketing, branding, and communications expertise from advertising, banking, insurance, property development, hospitality, and fintech industries. He served as Head of Corporate Communications & Marketing at a leading bank in Cambodia.
 
Mr Lim said, “I am honoured to join Heriot-Watt University Malaysia at this exciting time. I look forward to contributing to its growth and enhancing our engagement with students, partners, and the wider community. My experience in Southeast Asia’s key sectors has given me unique insights into consumer behaviour and digital trends, which I plan to leverage in our marketing strategies. I am also passionate about integrating sustainability into our marketing efforts to deliver exceptional value to students while promoting responsible practices.”
 
Mr Lim will focus on advancing recruitment and admissions, employing innovative marketing strategies to attract prospective students and strengthen partner relationships.
 
Dr Jimmy Tam Appointed Head of the School of Social Sciences
Dr Tam has been with Heriot-Watt University Malaysia since 2016. He has made significant contributions through various leadership roles, including Assistant Professor in Accounting and Finance. His research focuses on Learning and Teaching pedagogy, and the Commercialisation of R&D outputs.
 
He is also the Treasurer of the Malaysian Society for Higher Education Policy and Research Development.
 
Dr Tam said, “I am deeply grateful for the support from my colleagues as I take on the role of Head of the School of Social Sciences, and look forward to working with everyone to achieve the University’s future ambitions.”
In his new role, Dr Tam will manage programme delivery, staff oversight, and student support, focusing on professional development and recruitment.
 
Staff and students welcomed the new appointments and senior leaders at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia who will play a key role in ensuring our graduates are future ready.
