From MCKL Torchbearer, Zheng Wei's Journey to the International Physics Olympiad
KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 (Bernama) -- It is an honour for us to rally behind Ooi Zheng Wei, one of our many talented Cambridge A Level student, representing Malaysia at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) at Paris, France, in July 2025. Zheng Wei chose MCKL for its strong A Level foundation and nurturing environment that empowered him to pursue his passion for physics.
Zheng Wei’s passion for physics grew during high school, which led him to aim for the IPhO. His fascination with physics deepened as he read works by great physicists like Richard Feynman. For Zheng Wei, physics was not just about solving problems; it was about appreciating the beauty and complexity of the world. The road to representing Malaysia at the IPhO was long and rigorous.
Zheng Wei participated in several rounds of testing, including online university-level exams, a physical round at a secondary school, and an experimental round in Penang. The top five scorers were selected for the national team, and Zheng Wei earned his spot through his exceptional performance. Preparation for the IPhO was demanding, particularly when it came to honing his experiment skills. "Experiment skills were my weakest area," he admits. During training camps, Zheng Wei practiced extensively, using a variety of experiment kits, and studied Olympiad-level handouts to strengthen his problem-solving abilities. His hard work paid off, preparing him for the challenges of the competition.
Throughout this journey, Zheng Wei received invaluable support from MCKL’s lecturers, particularly Dr. Yohashama and Ms. Elizabeth Tan, who helped build the foundation he needed to excel. Their guidance was crucial in his academic development. As Zheng Wei heads to Paris, he is excited yet slightly nervous. “I am unsure if the French will reply in French if I speak to them in their native language,” he laughs. But his focus remains on making the most of this incredible opportunity. “I am looking forward to exploring academic and career options in physics, especially since I have heard France is excellent for research in the field.”
Beyond the competition, Zheng Wei has bigger aspirations. "I aspire to become proficient in the language of physics so that I can mentor future Olympiad participants and help them strive for gold in the years to come," he says. Zheng Wei’s success is an inspiration to all of us at MCKL. His journey highlights the power of hard work, curiosity, and passion in unlocking incredible opportunities.
As he prepares for his trip to Paris, we are confident that this is only the beginning of his many future successes. We wish Ooi Zheng Wei the best of luck at the International Physics Olympiad 2025, and we’re proud to see him represent Malaysia on the global stage.
