ASEAN-AIPA LEADERS’ INTERFACE REINFORCES COMMITMENT TO INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE REGIONAL PROGRESS

Monday 26/05/2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The 14th ASEAN-AIPA Leaders’ Interface, held today in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, reaffirmed the strong commitment of ASEAN Heads of State/Government and AIPA Member Parliaments to deepening collaboration in pursuit of an inclusive, sustainable, and people-centred ASEAN.

As President of the 46th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), YB Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari bin Abdul extended warm congratulations to YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, on his assumption as Chairperson of ASEAN 2025. He praised the Prime Minister’s visionary leadership and underscored the importance of strong executive-legislative synergy in driving ASEAN’s priorities and reinforcing regional centrality.

AIPA welcomed the theme of the 46th ASEAN Summit, “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, reiterating support for ASEAN Vision 2045: Our Shared Future, and committed to collaborating effectively with ASEAN governments to advance the implementation through legislative cooperation, oversight, and strengthened parliamentary diplomacy.

The Interface further acknowledged the importance of empowering all segments of society, with particular emphasis on women and youth. Recent engagements—such as the 4th Meeting of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians of AIPA (WAIPA) and the 2nd Consultative Meeting of Young Parliamentarians of AIPA (YPA)—reinforced the need for gender-balanced representation and future-oriented policy approaches to build a resilient ASEAN.

On the economic and environmental front, AIPA called for enhanced legislative support to accelerate digital integration, foster sustainable technology infrastructure and promote green finance and investment. It welcomed ongoing initiatives such as the ASEAN Digital Integration Framework and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting non-traditional security issues, including climate change, food security, and energy resilience.

In alignment with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, AIPA also reiterated its unwavering support for peace, international law, and regional stability. It advocated for continued dialogue and diplomacy in addressing geopolitical developments, including in Myanmar, the South China Sea, Gaza, and Ukraine.

Concluding the Interface, AIPA Member Parliaments echoed a unified call for governments and legislatures to move forward together in building a peaceful, inclusive, and resilient ASEAN—where development is equitable, and all voices are represented in shaping the region’s collective future.

The ASEAN-AIPA Leaders’ Interface is a hallmark of ASEAN’s commitment to institutional synergy between the executive and legislative branches. As a dedicated platform for dialogue between ASEAN Heads of State/Government and the Speakers, Deputy Speakers, and Representatives of AIPA Member Parliaments, the Interface serves to align regional priorities through inclusive, multi-stakeholder governance. It affirms the belief that ASEAN’s vision of a people-oriented, people-centred community can only be fully realised through robust parliamentary engagement and accountability.

Chaired by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, the Interface featured the delivery of the AIPA Message by His Excellency Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr.) Johari bin Abdul, President of 46th AIPA and Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malaysia.
