Penang Heritage Photography Fiesta 4.0 Spotlights Penang’s Green Heritage

Monday 25/08/2025

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- The fourth edition of the Penang Heritage Photography Fiesta concluded on a high note, awarding 17 prizes worth RM70,000 to outstanding photography and videography participants while championing conservation of Penang’s green heritage.

This year’s theme, Capturing Penang’s Green Heritage and Nature challenged participants to portray the state’s diverse natural landscapes, while raising awareness of environmental issues.

The three-month-long initiative was jointly organised by PPB Group Berhad and its property division PPB Properties, in collaboration with its partner for the fourth consecutive year, Sony Malaysia.

Strategic partners, including Penang Hill Corporation, Penang Green Council and George Town Festival, lent their expertise to ensure the event created meaningful conversations about environmental conservation and artistic expression.

“This year’s theme is a meaningful reminder that our environment and heritage are not separate, but deeply connected,” said Penang Green Council. “We believe that conservation begins with awareness, and photography is a powerful tool to inspire that awareness. We hope this year’s Photography Fiesta will not only spark creativity but also nurture a deeper sense of responsibility among the public to cherish and safeguard our shared natural and cultural treasures.”

In underscoring Penang’s green heritage, Penang Hill was one of the prime locations that perfectly encapsulates how nature and heritage coincides. "Penang Hill as a gateway to Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, provides an extraordinary canvas for capturing the wonders of nature and history, while sparking reflection that reminds us of the need to safeguard this irreplaceable treasure for future generations, in line with Penang Hill Corporation’s values of conservation, education, and responsible stewardship,” said Penang Hill Corporation.

From mist-covered forest trails to intimate wildlife portraits, the finalist images and videos told powerful stories of Penang that is as breathtaking as it is fragile. The competition saw entries from participants of all ages, involving seasoned professionals and enthusiastic youths, united by a shared love for Penang’s green spaces. Beyond the beauty of its indigenous flora and flora, this year’s theme aims to document Penang’s natural heritage before it’s too late.

With the sharp increase in the pool prize compared to past years, the stakes of the competition grew with much debate among the two panels of professional judges on which entries deserved the top prizes. The range of finalist entries showcased a much higher quality, blending both technical photography or videography skills and storytelling in portraying the state’s distinctive charm.

Fifteen prizes were awarded across three categories: youth photography and videography for participants aged 15 to 25 years old, as well as an open photography catered to all ages. This year’s ceremony also saw two special mention prizes given out to public voted favourites from the photography exhibition.

All shortlisted photographs from the competition are currently exhibited from 4 to 23 August 2025 at The Whiteaways Arcade, alongside a curated collection from veteran photographers David ST Loh and Kiah Ng.

By displaying the images for the public to enjoy, the exhibition aims to inspire a deeper appreciation for Penang’s natural beauty and support our very own artistic homegrown talents, especially the next generation of talents.

The Fiesta also offered hands-on photography and videography workshops and guided photo walks by industry professionals, empowering participants with vocational skills in photography and videography held in June and July 2025.
