PUTRAJAYA, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- The Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia, a statutory body under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), today organised the Pre-ISES 2026 Forum on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at the Putrajaya Marriott Hotel as part of the lead-up to the 7th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2026.
 
With the theme “Resilient Battery Storage for Tropical Climate,” the forum marks a key milestone in SEDA Malaysia’s preparations for ISES 2026, themed “Envisioning Sustainable Energy Beyond Borders.” Aligned with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the event underscores the critical role of battery energy storage in addressing grid instability in a decentralised renewable generation, solar power intermittency—particularly the “duck curve”—and ensuring Malaysia’s future energy system is flexible, resilient, and capable of supporting higher renewable energy penetration.
 
SEDA Malaysia Advances BESS Knowledge Through Collaboration with CSIRO
The forum began with a detailed report-sharing session titled “Insights on Consumer-based Battery Energy Storage Systems in the Tropical Climate of Malaysia,” a collaboration between Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Australia and SEDA Malaysia. Presented by Dr. Asem Mousa of the CSIRO, the report provides the first-ever real-world insights into BESS performance under Malaysia’s hot and humid conditions—highlighting safety, efficiency, and lifespan considerations for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. The report also benchmarks international best practices and laid a foundational framework to support informed market decisions and accelerate the adoption of BESS technology in Malaysia.
 
Leading Malaysia’s Shift Toward a Clean Energy Future
In his opening speech, YBhg. Dato’ Hamzah Hussin, Chief Executive Officer of SEDA Malaysia, highlighted BESS as a critical enabler for Malaysia’s energy transition, supporting flexibility, grid stability, and optimised solar power utilisation. He noted that Malaysia is at a pivotal early stage in developing its national BESS ecosystem, with pilot projects emerging across utilities and private players, alongside early industry efforts to localise BESS assembly and manufacturing.
 
Dato’ Hamzah stressed that BESS not only solves technical challenges but also presents a strategic economic opportunity—one that can stimulate innovation, attract investment, and create new markets for clean technologies within Malaysia and the region.
 
Driving Clean Energy Through Global Partnerships
A keynote presentation titled “Shaping a Cleaner Future Together: Strengthening Collaboration with Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I)” was delivered by Michael Ting,
Senior Manager, Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) Australian High Commission. His remarks underscored the value of Malaysia–Australia cooperation in building resilient, sustainable, and technology-driven energy systems.
 
Strengthening Malaysia’s BESS Ecosystem to Advance NETR Aspirations
The programme continued with a high-level panel session featuring experts from CSIRO, TNB Research, UiTM’s Solar Research Institute (SRI), and Gentari. Moderated by Encik Saiful Hakim bin Abdul Rahman, Director of the Strategic Planning Division at SEDA Malaysia, the session examined Malaysia’s readiness for BESS deployment, regional market trends, regulatory considerations, and strategic pathways to strengthen the national energy storage ecosystem.
 
Panellists collectively agreed that advancing BESS is essential for achieving NETR’s aspirations of a secure, affordable, and low-carbon energy future for all Malaysians.
 
Supporting the Vision of ISES 2026: Sustainable Energy Beyond Borders
Insights from this Pre-ISES forum will contribute directly to shaping ISES 2026, reinforcing SEDA Malaysia’s role in advancing sustainable energy discourse. As Malaysia prepares for the summit next year, SEDA Malaysia remains committed to driving knowledge-sharing, industry partnerships, and cross-border collaboration to accelerate the national energy transition.
 
SEDA Malaysia also invites the public to save the date for the 7^th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2026, which will be held on 11–12 August 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). Registration details will be announced soon.
