SEDA Malaysia Highlights Role of AI in Energy Transition Ahead of ISES 2026

SEDA Malaysia successfully organised a webinar titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Its Role in the Energy Sector,” which was attended by 137 university students from across Malaysia.


PUTRAJAYA, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- The Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia successfully organised a webinar titled “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Its Role in the Energy Sector, bringing together young audience with a strong interest to explore how advanced digital technologies are shaping the future of sustainable energy.

Held via Microsoft Teams digital platform, the webinar served as a strategic knowledge-sharing session in support of Malaysia’s clean energy agenda and as an early engagement initiative in the lead-up to the International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2026.

The opening address from Dr. Khairunnisa Kamarul Zaman, Deputy Director of Strategic Planning of SEDA Malaysia who emphasised on SEDA’s role as Malaysia’s key sustainable energy organisation, while highlighting the importance of youth engagement across SEDA’s programmes and initiatives. 

“SEDA recognises the energy transition as a long-term journey that requires the involvement of the younger generation, particularly those with skills and interest in AI and digital technologies,” said Dr. Khairunnisa.

The main sharing session was delivered by Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Ibrahim Shapiai @ Abd. Razak, Director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIRO) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), who highlighted the growing importance of AI and demonstrated how AI-driven technologies can be applied to address real-world challenges in the energy sector, including applications in smart cities.

Mr. Saiful Hakim Abdul Rahman, Director of Strategic Planning at the SEDA Malaysia, shared insights on the implementation of AI in Malaysia’s energy sector, covering areas such as energy demand forecasting, system optimisation and smart grid management, as well as the challenges and way forward in advancing AI development and adoption in the country.

The webinar concluded with the soft launch of the SEDA Innovation Challenge (SIC) by Mr. Saiful Hakim. The initiative is designed to encourage youth to develop innovative ideas and solutions for sustainable energy, while recognising AI as a key enabling tool that can be leveraged to drive broader energy innovation.

The challenge is positioned as a talent development platform aligned with the broader objectives of ISES 2026, which seeks to accelerate sustainable energy adoption through innovation, collaboration, and thought leadership.
 
SEDA Malaysia remains committed to nurturing future-ready talent and fostering innovation through strategic engagement programmes. Initiatives such as this webinar and the SIC reinforce SEDA’s role in supporting Malaysia’s energy transition and strengthening the channel of skilled professionals ahead of ISES 2026.

Supporting the Vision of ISES 2026: Sustainable Energy Beyond Borders

Insights from this Pre-ISES Forum will play a key role in shaping ISES 2026, further strengthening SEDA Malaysia’s leadership in the sustainable energy agenda. As the nation prepares for next year’s summit, SEDA Malaysia remains dedicated to fostering knowledge sharing, promoting industry collaboration, and enhancing cross-border partnerships to accelerate Malaysia’s energy.
 
SEDA Malaysia also invites the public to save the date for the 7th International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2026, which will be held on 11–12 August 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). Registration details will be announced soon.
