KUCHING, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation (Bioeconomy Corporation) and Sarawak Medical Centre, which owns and operates Normah Medical Specialist Centre, have entered into a collaboration to explore opportunities in regenerative medicine and healthcare innovation in Sarawak.

The collaboration was formalised through the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, paving the way for both parties to explore potential applications in regenerative medicine, precision diagnostics, medical devices and complementary medicine.

It will also examine opportunities to introduce locally developed bio-based healthcare solutions that could enhance patient care while strengthening Sarawak’s healthcare innovation ecosystem.

Sarawak Medical Centre is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Sarawak State Financial Secretary Incorporated, making it a state-owned healthcare entity and a strategic partner in efforts to advance healthcare innovation in Sarawak.

Under the collaboration, Bioeconomy Corporation, an agency under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), will identify and connect Normah Medical Specialist Centre with suitable local healthcare technologies and solutions from its portfolio companies and the wider biotechnology ecosystem.

Normah Medical Specialist Centre, meanwhile, will provide clinical perspectives and support in assessing the suitability of these innovations, including access to relevant clinical expertise and facilities where appropriate.

The collaboration comes amid Malaysia’s ageing population, with Sarawak recording the second-highest proportion of residents aged 65 and above among the 12 ageing states, at 9.7%.

At the same time, Sarawak’s healthcare travel sector continues to expand. The state welcomed more than 104,000 healthcare travellers in 2025, generating RM203 million in revenue, a 27% increase from 2024.

Chief Executive Officer of Bioeconomy Corporation, Mohd Khairul Fidzal Abdul Razak, said the developments present an opportunity for Sarawak to further strengthen its position as a regional healthcare destination.
 
“As Sarawak’s population ages and healthcare travel continues to grow, there is a clear opportunity to bring the right innovations closer to patients.

“The challenge is not merely to develop new healthcare technologies, but to translate these innovations into practical solutions that can be meaningfully applied in clinical settings.

“This MoU provides a platform for us to connect Malaysia’s biotechnology ecosystem with healthcare providers and explore how innovations in regenerative medicine and precision diagnostics can support Sarawak’s ambition to become a leading healthcare destination in the region,” he said.

Following the MoU exchange, Bioeconomy Corporation will engage BioNexus Status and Bio-based Accelerator (BBA) companies to identify suitable healthcare technologies and solutions that could potentially be developed in collaboration with Normah Medical Specialist Centre.

The collaboration could also provide healthcare professionals at Normah Medical Specialist Centre with opportunities to explore the latest healthcare technologies and assess their potential clinical applications, while patients could benefit from suitable innovations that may enhance the quality and delivery of care.

The collaboration supports the objectives of the National Biotechnology Policy 2.0 under MOSTI, particularly in accelerating biotechnology commercialisation, strengthening industry-healthcare collaboration and creating opportunities for Malaysian biotechnology innovations to be translated into real-world healthcare applications.
