KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- Supratechnic (M) Sdn Bhd ("Supratechnic"), a member of USP Group Ltd. (SGX: BRS), today signed a Collaboration Agreement with Icelandic fisheries technology company GreenFish hf. ("GreenFish") to introduce Afli, an AI-powered fishing app for small-scale fishermen, to Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

Under the agreement, Supratechnic becomes exclusive distributor of Afli in the three markets, while fellow USP Group company SuprAI Capital Pte. Ltd. leads the Group’s direction for Afli with GreenFish.

Afli combines AI, satellite observations and oceanographic data to highlight areas where fish are more likely to be found, refreshed at least every six hours. It works offline at sea and will launch in Bahasa Malaysia and English, with Simplified Chinese and Bahasa Indonesia to follow.

Planned trip-safety features include an overdue alert to a shore contact and an emergency (SOS) function. Afli has no satellite connection and is not a substitute for statutory safety equipment. Each fisherman controls whether his position is shared.

Malaysia’s inshore fishermen (nelayan pantai) face high fuel, labour and time costs, uncertain catches and limited mobile coverage. The Department of Statistics Malaysia recorded approximately 1.39 million tonnes of marine fish landings in 2024.

Afli also complements Government support for fishermen, including RM178 million under Budget 2027 for catch incentives and cost-of-living allowances.

Melvin Tan, Chief Executive Officer of Supratechnic / Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of USP Group, said:

"Every fisherman who goes out to sea should be able to come home safely, with a fair day's catch. Afli puts AI-powered predictions on the phone they already carry, alongside the knowledge they have built up over generations."

Baldur S. Blöndal, Chief Operating Officer of GreenFish, said:

"Our technology and methods have proven effective with large-scale fisheries, and we look forward to working with the Supratechnic team to put the same tools in the hands of Malaysian fishermen."

Supratechnic plans group subscriptions through fishermen’s associations to keep Afli affordable for nelayan kecil, including B40 households.

A free pilot for 50 fishermen from at least three Supratechnic branches on both coasts of Peninsular Malaysia will run four to six months through the monsoon, measuring prediction accuracy and fuel and time spent locating fish. The pilot app is due within 60 days of signing.

Commercial launch across Supratechnic’s seven Malaysian branches, and later Singapore and Indonesia, will follow a joint review of pilot results.
