● MIDA’s participation supports Malaysia’s ambition to achieve 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050, while strengthening local participation across the Renewable Energy (RE) value chain.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) through IGEM 2026 is strengthening Malaysia’s renewable energy (RE) ecosystem by connecting major RE players with Malaysian domestic companies, and turning investment interest into quality, actionable opportunities that drive stronger domestic capabilities and supply chains for the country’s energy transition.

Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, Chief Executive Officer of MIDA, said, “Malaysia’s energy transition is not only about increasing renewable energy capacity; it is also an opportunity to build stronger Malaysian companies, develop specialised capabilities and create greater economic value at home. At MIDA, we want to ensure that every quality investment we facilitate creates meaningful linkages with our domestic industry and contributes to the development of a more competitive renewable energy ecosystem.”

“Our inaugural Renewable Energy Supply Chain Programme marks an important step in this direction. By bringing major renewable energy players together with Malaysian vendors, manufacturers, engineers and service providers, we are creating direct pathways for local companies to participate in actual projects and supply-chain opportunities. This is how we move from investment interest to tangible industrial outcomes. As Malaysia advances towards its 70 per cent renewable energy capacity target by 2050, we see significant opportunities for Malaysian companies to move further up the value chain — from supplying components and providing engineering and technical services, to developing technologies and eventually serving regional and global markets. Our ambition is for Malaysia not only to deploy green technologies, but increasingly to develop, produce and export them,” he added.

Strengthening Malaysia’s Renewable Energy Supply Chain

The Renewable Energy Supply Chain Programme, themed “Strengthening Malaysia’s Renewable Energy Ecosystem with MIDA”, was held on 8 October 2026 at IGEM 2026 in KLCC and connected anchor companies, TNB Power Generation Sdn. Bhd. (TNB GENCO) and TNB Renewables Sdn. Bhd. (TNB RE) with Malaysian vendors, manufacturers, engineers and service providers. The programme kickstarted with remarks by Puan Zuaida Abdullah, Deputy CEO (Investment Development), MIDA.

Approximately 25 Malaysian manufacturing and services companies participated in the business-matching sessions to explore collaboration opportunities and renewable energy supply-chain needs. The programme also recognised five Renewable Energy Local Champions — Alliance MEP Sdn. Bhd., Reactive Energy Sdn. Bhd., Deltaspec (M) Sdn. Bhd., P.E.S.B. Engineering Sdn. Bhd. and SAA Engineering & Marine Sdn. Bhd. — for their technical capabilities, highlighting the growing participation of Malaysian companies in higher-value segments of the renewable energy ecosystem.

“As TNB Genco continues to expand our renewable energy portfolio, with the pioneering Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar project at Tasik Kenyir now in execution, we are committed to enabling Malaysian companies to grow alongside this transition. Our collaboration with MIDA provides an important platform to connect capable local manufacturers, vendors and service providers with tangible opportunities across our project pipeline, while strengthening domestic capabilities, generating sustainable economic value and positioning Malaysian solutions to serve both domestic and regional markets,” said Dato’ Shahrir Abdul Latiff, Managing Director of TNB Power Generation Sdn. Bhd. (TNB GENCO).

“At TNB Renewables, our ambition goes beyond adding renewable megawatts. As we grow our renewable energy portfolio, we want each project to create lasting value for Malaysia by deepening local participation across the renewable energy value chain. This means creating meaningful opportunities for Malaysian contractors, manufacturers, vendors and service providers to build capabilities, grow alongside our project pipeline and progressively participate in higher-value areas such as engineering, technology, construction, operations and specialised services.”

“Through our collaboration with MIDA, we aim to strengthen the link between renewable energy investment and domestic industrial development — supporting greater localisation, capability and skills development, technology transfer, quality employment and wider economic spillovers. This reflects our ‘Beyond Megawatts’ approach: ensuring that the energy transition not only delivers cleaner energy, but also develops stronger Malaysian businesses and capabilities that can compete domestically and, ultimately, across the region,” said Encik Elmie Fairul Mashuri, Managing Director, TNB Renewables Sdn. Bhd. (TNB RE).

From Green Investment to Wider Economic Opportunities

Aligning with MIDA’s #InvestLokal agenda, its participation at IGEM 2026 demonstrates its role in connecting investment with industry and linking global opportunities with Malaysian capabilities. With the recent measures announced under Budget 2027, the initiative further reinforces Malaysia’s commitment to accelerating the green economy and energy transition. The extension of the Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA) incentives until 31 December 2030, alongside a combined RM17 billion in grid and energy infrastructure, as well as investment funds involving TNB, UEM Lestra and KWAP, will strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure and enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness in attracting high quality and sustainable green investments.
